Error message - Please update video card driver or change selected video encoder
This error message is received when your driver for the selected encoder is out of date. If you are using one of the hardware based encoders (Nvidia NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync) please update your drivers accordingly.
- Link to driver update for Nvidia
- Link to driver update for AMD
- Link to driver update for Intel Quick Sync
If you do not wish to update your drivers, you can always swap to the x264 software encoder to record at any time.
This encoding method is heavy on the CPU compared to the encoders listed above so we recommended avoiding using it.
Error message - Selected video settings are too high. Please lower the settings and retry
This error message is received when your selected combination of Codec/Preset/Resolution/FPS combo is too demanding for your computer (lack of PC resources). Please try lowering the settings and playing around with them to find the optimal configuration for your PC.
If you have the option, we advise using one of the hardware encoders (Nvidia NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync) as this will free up some computer resources and allow higher quality recording in some cases.

Error message - System sound capture error / No Playback Device
This error can be related to a couple of issues, the most common one is the Razer Kraken headset compatibility issue.
If you do not own this headset, please go to Overwolf's settings → 'Capture' tab, and make sure that your sound devices are listed there and are adjusted.
Making sure that your sound drivers are updated is also important. If you're still experiencing this issue, please contact us at support@overwolf.com and attach your Overwolf logs.
Error message - Missing system files
The mf.dll file is one of many DLL files that come with Windows Media Player.
We have found that in order to record videos properly, Windows has to have this DLL in its system files. In order to record even on the N version of windows (a version that doesn't come with Windows Media Player as a default player), you will need to download the right version from here:
Error message - Unknown error occurred
This is an unknown issue with the NVENC encoder.
Please consider changing the encoder via the Overwolf's capture settings page:
- Open the Overwolf settings menu
- Navigate to the 'Capture' settings
- Scroll down and click on 'Advanced'
- Under 'Encoding' select a different codec:
- Quick Sync
- Nvidia NVENC
- AMD AMF
Or the x264 if you don't have any of the above
Error message - Unsupported sound format
When trying to use any of Overwolf's video services (Game capture / Replay HUD) with a specific sound format you will encounter a recording error.
